Today I was in St Ives for a day more focused on arts and culture. But that doesn’t mean wildlife is off the cards, and in any busy harbour there is always something to see…This time it was gulls, mainly Herring with a single Black-backed among them.
What was interesting was that while there were birds here and there all along the harbour, in this one spot around fifty birds had congregated in and around the water’s edge. New birds came and went too.
The reason for this soon became clear. A nearby outlet pipe was sending freshwater into the harbour. This gave the birds a great opportunity for both bathing and drinking, which they were happily taking up.
